Keeping The Demons At Bay

Dear Family,

The older I get, the more I realize that much of adulthood comes down to emotional regulation.

Can you stay grounded when life becomes difficult? Can you manage stress without self-destructing? Can you process disappointment without spiraling? Can you carry responsibility without becoming consumed by it?

I do not think enough people talk about this.

We live in a culture obsessed with performance and achievement, but very few people are teaching others how to regulate themselves emotionally in a world constantly pulling people toward distraction, addiction, anxiety, outrage, and escapism.

That is why I have come to believe so deeply in rituals.

A routine is something you do. A ritual is something that shapes who you become. Training in the morning. Reading before bed. Family dinners. Prayer. Long walks. Journaling. Date nights. Saving money consistently. Turning your phone off. Going for a run. Sitting quietly without stimulation.

These rituals are not random habits. They are anchors.

They help stabilize us in a chaotic world. And if we are being honest, most people are fighting something internally all the time, myself included. It's no easy being a husband, father, and business owner. I'm susceptible to the same stress, anxiety, and fear as everyone else, albeit it may take a different form at the season of my life.

The demons simply wear different outfits depending on the person.

I saw this growing up around Irvington and Newark. I saw brilliant young men and women with unlimited potential slowly lose themselves. Some gave into drugs. Some gave into alcohol. Some gave into violence. Some simply stopped believing their lives could become something greater.

But truthfully, I have also seen versions of this at the highest levels of professional success.

I have seen people in wealth management, law, finance, and entrepreneurship who looked successful on paper but completely unraveled emotionally the moment life stopped cooperating with their plans. Because money does not automatically create emotional resilience. Success does not create inner peace.

Eventually, life tests everyone.

And in those moments, people do not rise to the level of their aspirations.

They fall to the level of their rituals. That is why Christian and I spend so much time thinking intentionally about the environment we are creating for Madison Grace. She is still young, but we already understand that children absorb far more from what they see than what they are told.

She is watching how we manage stress, communicate, take care of our bodies, respond to adversity, and move through the world.

That matters. Because eventually she will inherit not just our advice, but our patterns. I think one of the greatest responsibilities we have as parents is teaching our children rituals that help them navigate modern life without losing themselves. Especially now. Because this world is overstimulating.

Everything is competing for attention.

Algorithms are engineered to addict people. Consumer culture constantly tells people they are incomplete. Social media distorts reality.

People are connected to everyone and emotionally grounded to no one.

That is why rituals matter more than ever. They create stability. They create emotional resilience. They help keep people connected to themselves when the world becomes noisy.
