Treating Disruptive, Impulse Control and Conduct Disorders
Sun 8 Sep 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM BST
What are Disruptive, Impulse Control and Conduct Disorders?
These disorders that are reflect a wide range of behaviours and emotions but are linked by difficulties in controlling aggressive behaviors, self-control, and impulses. The main subtypes classified under this heading are:
- Oppositional defiant disorder
- Intermittent explosive disorder
- Conduct disorder
- Pyromania
- Kleptomania
Usually such tendencies are seem as a danger primarily to others’ safety and to social boundaries. Examples would include fighting, destroying property, enduring defiance, stealing, pathological lying, and extreme rule breaking.
While these tendencies are identified in DSM-5 as 'disorders' there is considerable debate as to whether or note these patterns of behaviours should be construed in this way. In any event, clients engaging in such behaviours typically want to stop and can be helped in so doing by tried and tested interventions and structured techniques. This workshop will provide a general overview of this area with a focus on practical approaches which can help clients and their families.
