Welcome to the smuttier side of romance books with alien peens and the mates that love them.
Mating on Necias Prime is bit like a battle, out of necessity.
Their bodies are equipped with glands that produce stimulants that help negate the pain associated with retracting and exposing their epul from their second, thick skin.
Epul are the extra bones that come out like spikes from their skin as defense and also decoration similar to peacocks to show health and the ability to be of service to a mate.
The larger the shoulder epul, or the more epul a warrior has is a sign that they produce enough stimulant in their glands to help balance out their mate and help protect spawn, and ensure a proper coupling.
In order to maintain homeostasis, and equilibrium of their body they require to mate with another warrior regularly to balance their glands and prevent their hearts from failing with too much stimulant. They have two hearts because of this, but also it is the cause of their rutting (or loss of higher brain function to seek a mate to balance their over stimulated bodies.)
The rut seeks out willing mates that have gifted the warriors with their juice previously, but lacking an offering, a warrior seeks out fights instead. The sharing of blood with a warrior with a neutralizing blood type, or fighting a mate that proves his worth to them so they can expel extra stimulant with fighting and fucking saves their hearts from seizing up.
This results in regular "bathing" rituals with necia warriors to help maintain their levels and prevent rut.
It is common in ancient culture for them to fight their intended mate, and when a female warrior withdraws her epul is when she's accepted the challenger and they mate for their tribe to witness that the warrior can indeed provide sufficiently for the match.
These matches do not mean that they are in love, or are bonded for life. Some of these bonds are lifelong, but the mating in this manner is mostly symbiotic in nature.
They DO however, have what they considered goddess given mates, their Pulsunne. If a warrior finds this kind of bond they are mated for life, and do not seek another. If their mate dies their glands slow down, unable to produce the same kind of stimulant, they stop showing off their epul, and usually become an elder in the tribe or enter their final dual to end their life and join their mate.
With their glands unable to stimulate, it is painful to use their epul, and they have no need to exchange fluids to regulate themselves. Nor do they have any need of using elder root to neutralize their adrenaline and lessen the effects of rutting without a mate.
In Commander Vox Direl's case he must figure out a way of convincing Riley that she is more than just a biological need for him, she is his reason for life.
