Singing your Worries to the tune of Happy Birthday.

image

Dear ,

Have you ever tried singing "My boss hates me and is going to fire me soon" to the tune of 'Happy Birthday'?

Probably not. But if you were a client undergoing treatment for anxiety through ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) then you very well might have done. Why would a therapist have a client do such a strange thing? Well, it's part of the idea of Cognitive Defusion. But ACT is more than just a set of imaginative techniques, it is a distinctive therapeutic modality which, nevertheless, can be integrated into main CBT treatment.

Having been initially skeptical I found out more and started working collaboratively with clients on ACT techniques. Our new workshop Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) - A Practical Introduction offers a practical, no nonsense walk through of the main ideas and techniques in this still little-understood modality. Why not join us this Wednesday evening and add a new string to your bow?

What is the workshop about?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a distinctive empirically-based psychological intervention that uses acceptance and mindfulness strategies, alongside commitment and behavior change techniques. A key objective is to work with the client to increase psychological flexibility. This focus on flexibility involves helping the client contact the present moment fully as a conscious human being.

As part of the 'Third Wave' of psychological therapies, ACT is not simply about overcoming pain or fighting emotions; but rather focuses on embracing life and experiencing everything it has to offer. Rather than suppress or avoid psychological experiences, ACT is based on the idea that acceptance and mindfulness can be more productive responses to the ups and down of life.
